Meet Mathias

Previously, I worked at JYSK while I was a student. I really loved to be at JYSK so of course it made sense for me to continue up the JYSK career ladder

What is it like to be a Sales Assistant with JYSK?

It is fun to be allowed to re-build the store look & design every time a new season starts and thus be allowed to put your own mark on the store. When you are responsible for an area in the store, you have a great influence on how it should look and where the products should go. It’s really motivating to have that responsibility. Every day there are new tasks and challenges so it’s important to be commited to the job because it is demanding in a  good way. The whole team gives it 110% so of course you should do that yourself too. It's a really cool feeling, and you get a huge "kick" the first time you sell for over  1,000. You really feel that you can make a difference. It is always a great feeling when you win some competitions either internally or externally - for example, when you beat your own target sales numbers or perform better than the other stores

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • There are many different tasks that you need to perform, so it’s important to listen well to learn it all.
  • You have to work with your team and I find that you do that best by getting to know them very well.  Then,  you can draw on each other's strengths and help each other develop the parts that may not be quite as strong.
  • Learning to cope with customers is always a challenge, especially when it comes to unsatisfied customers and complaints. But it is always fun to be allowed to sell for so many different types of people, as they all expect something special. Our main task is to do things with a smile and ensure that our customers are happy and they leave with a positive customer experience and great JYSK products in their bag.

Describe the work culture in your store

  • If there is something that’s bothering us, we talk to each other about it.
  • Our team works really well together. We support and help each other and thus make each other even better sales people, which is certainly one of the reasons why we reach such good performance numbers.
  • There is a really good atmosphere where the energy is high and we praise each other often.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • You get a lot out of working at JYSK.  You will get to work with a good team and come into a company that invests well in its staff and they really care about people & make sure we’re all happy and healthy at work.
  • You quickly get responsibility and the ability to have a big influence in the store, so you build a huge knowledge when you work here and you will feel like an important part of the team.
  • You can quickly progress up through the job levels at JYSK and they will do everything to help you, so if you want it, you can create a super career here.

Meet Christina…

What is it like to be an Area Responsible in JYSK?

  • It is great to get responsibility and be allowed to put your own mark on different area in the store. When you are an Area Responsible, you are solely responsible for a specific product area. Therefore, you have a big influence on how the decoration and construction of the area is done and also on how it looks. You can really decide what the customer sees when they enter the store, it is very motivating.
  • JYSK is generally good at giving their employees responsibility but only if you want it.
  • I am the type who likes when everyday life is a little hectic, I don’t like to just stand still. There is always something to do at JYSK even if there are no customers, there are a thousand other things to do.
  • It is great to get the feeling that you can successfully provide the level of customer service that is expected at JYSK - all stores are motivated to create a great customer experience and I really like that.
  • We hold some internal competitions in the store but also with the other stores. It is fun to boast a little when we can achieve the best results. And then it is just mega motivating that we, as a store, are also rewarded for it in the form of bonuses or other great prizes.
  • It is good to be part of a good team here in the store but there’s also great support from all the other stores. JYSK has a fantastic culture where everyone helps and supports each other, so once you have joined JYSK it is difficult to change.

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • There are many different tasks and always something to do so some days can be hectic with many customer orders and generally just a lot of customers in the store so you have to stay on-form from morning until you go home.
  • We get daily figures on how sales are in our area - and if we have a poor index on our numbers compared to other stores in the country then it is my responsibility to take measures to boost turnover. This might be new exposures, training a colleagues, improving product knowledge, redirects in the area etc

Describe the work culture in your store

  • We have a really strong team with unity and where we can also challenge each other professionally. If you like to work in a team, then JYSK is really a good place. The atmosphere in the shop is always good and filled with energy.

  • We are good at handing out responsibility in our store. We have great confidence in each other and praise each other when we do things well.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • JYSK is just the best workplace – there are so many opportunities to succeed.
  • If you are a competitive person then JYSK is also the right place, because you are constantly competing with each other and the other stores and that can be really fun.
  • I have developed a lot on a personal level too, you become much more independent and mature and definitely much more responsible. It’s like joining the real adult world when you work at JYSK.
  • I guarantee that for everyone who ends up at JYSK, you’ll never want to leave. At JYSK, if you want something and you work for it, you can reach it in a short time.

What's next?

  • To begin with, I would like to become a Deputy Store Manager. But I also dream of becoming a store manager, so in 5 years I am hopefully a store manager in one of our stores.

Any questions?

If you have any questions about the position, please do not hesitate to contact our HR Department in Ireland at hrie@JYSK.com.

Meet Kasper…

Initial thoughts about the position?

  • I had no idea how big JYSK was. Honestly, I’m really surprised – it is much bigger and much more organised that I imagined. All my new colleagues are so well-educated, and they’ve all participated in various training programmes – they know so much about our products and how to do things. And I was actually quite shocked when I realised just how many colleagues I have around the world.
  • Well, everything was new to me so it took a bit of time for it all to become second nature … I spent some time when I first started getting to know JYSK and their way of doing things. It took a bit of time, but help is easy to get from all levels of the organisation – so if you have a question, it is easy to get an answer fast.

What is it like to be a Logistics Responsible in JYSK?

  • It’s just great to have so much responsibility in the stockroom.
  • Soon after I started, I attended a course for Logistics Responsibles. We were given some guidelines and process descriptions where you can always find an answer if you’re in doubt or have a question. So even as a new employee it was fairly easy to figure things out.
  • Having such good colleagues is everything to me. There is so much energy in the store, probably because we are such a young team. We care about each other so everything is not just work-work-work. We have a really strong team – but we also feel that we are an important part of the rest of the JYSK organisation.
  • If you have any questions, it is easy to reach out to Logistics Responsibles in other stores. We help each other with stuff – also across stores. We know each other from the training course we attended when we first started in JYSK, so you’re not just on your own.
  • You must be prepared for new major things happening in JYSK – all the time. New products, new campaigns, new seasons and things like that. We’re constantly on the move…!

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • If I have any stockroom questions, I can always call a Logistics Responsible from another store to discuss things. There’s a lot to learn – and I had so many questions to begin with. Now I’m used to looking at the JYSK Facebook page or find answers to my questions on the JYSK Intranet.
  • There’s really A LOT of work to do, and as a Logistics Responsible you have major responsibilities. That’s why it’s important that you communicate well with the rest of the store team so that they can find their way around the stockroom and handle things when you’re not there.

Describe the work culture in your store

  • We help each other. Always! If things are hectic, everyone helps out – even if you should have been off work 10 minutes ago.
  • The level of energy is high, and spirits are high so there’s always a super atmosphere in the store. Going to work is fun!
  • We are good at supporting each other. If one person has a bad day or does not feel well, someone else will take over and do a little extra.
  • There’s always lots of good jokes and a good mood in our store.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • There are so many career opportunities in JYSK. If you want to, you can move up the career ladder pretty fast. If you keep at it, do your best and have the will to make a difference, you can go very far in this organisation.
  • The team – no doubt about that. You do not find a better team spirit anywhere else. So many good colleagues to relate to and ask for help.
  • It is a good workplace with really good tools – so you’re not in any sense limited in the way you do your work.
  • In general, JYSK has a really good work environment and takes care of the staff.

What's next?

  • In three years I see myself on another step of my career ladder. Anyway, I’d really like to stay with JYSK. There are so many opportunities – all you have to do is ask for them.

Meet Henriette…

Initial thoughts about the position?

  • I was prepared for it to be a challenge to get so much responsibility so I was ready to use all of the previous experience I had. If you can make it, you break it - as they say.
  • Of course, it’s always nerve wracking thinking about whether you can perform really well and create good results in a new position.

What is it like to be a Deputy Store Manager in JYSK?

  • We have the best team and the happiest employees. We make things happen, challenge each other, make internal competitions and compete with other stores.
  • If you have the planning done well then you will achieve - that is the key to success. And you must remember to take the time to plan and involve one of the area responsible or another employee. You must always be one step ahead, so you don’t take a step backwards.
  • We can get things done in a slightly faster way by competing internally with each other. It just makes it all a bit more fun, and then it is just so cool to feel the enthusiasm among the employees.
  • The atmosphere in the store is fantastic and the energy is high - we celebrate our successes together every day.
  • The most important thing - and what I love the most - is to train the other employees in different  areas, challenge them a little on a personal level as well, and basically help them to develop.
  • I also like being challenged by both the store manager and the district manager - it's a great way to  improve yourself.
  • You get any help you need as a deputy store manager - you just have to put your hand out and ask for it and you will get help. There is support no matter who you approach in the organisation.
  • You can't run by yourself - you have to run with the others to make it all a success.

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • I was sent to the helm from day one. It can of course seem scary, but it gives a tremendous drive and energy to be thrown into things and get such responsibility.
  • Working with people can be challenging. But, on the other hand, it is also extremely exciting – especially working with employees, shaping them and helping them to develop.
  • There are always new marketing campaigns or a new season that knocks on the door, so it is important to get things planned properly - what should happen and how to do it.
  • You have to help the employees find a good balance and learn how to prioritize the tasks, the daily routines and the customer contact. Customers are, of course, the most important, so employees must be ready when customers enter the door.

Describe the work environment in your store

  • We have a very open culture where there is high ceilings and space for everyone.
  • The whole team has a super attitude to things - you just do it. People are hardworking, and if there is a deadline to be reached and respected, then we lift each other up to achieve it.
  • I don't think you find a team spirit like the one we have in JYSK in many other places - everyone wants to be here and we all come in with enthusiasm every single day.
  • We have great confidence in each other, so if you have got the responsibility for an area in the store or a specific task, then no one comes and looks over your shoulder. We help each other and spar with each other, but you are allowed to put your own mark on things.
  • We help each other no matter what, and give an extra hand if needed, so we can move on quickly.
  • We also have a very relaxing culture. You work hard when you need to, but you can also have fun together.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • If you give a little you will get so much. Only one person (you) sets the limitations.
  • If you want it, you can quickly climb up the career ladder. JYSK is really good at providing extra training  at a tremendously high level and they have some really skilled coaches and managers.
  • The interaction between HR and the coaches is top notch. We all have JYSK blue DNA. Why shouldn't you want to work at JYSK? - It is undoubtedly the best workplace. You just have to ask yourself: do I want to work for the 1st or 2nd place.

What is it like to be an SM in JYSK?

  • I’ve been working at JYSK for 11 years, and I never have two days that are exactly alike. Each day is different from the last one, full of actions and impressions.
  • A typical workday as a Store Manager consists of working with reports, planning staff time schedules, ordering goods, getting ready for campaigns, training and developing the staff, serving the customers, and following up on the employees and their different tasks.
  • I try hard to be a good mentor and trainer to my employees, by being very thorough and going into detail when I evaluate their performance, so they have the best chance of developing themselves and their skills. I take pride in helping my colleagues and boosting their careers.
  • My job is to lead the team to success by passing on my knowledge, to use and develop the potential of each employee, and to be very smart in delegating the responsibilities to create the most effective workforce.
  • I must be able to make fast decisions in all situations, sometimes even extreme ones, and be ready to take the responsibility for my store and staff.

Meet Roni...

What are your overall areas of responsibility?

  • As Head of Retail (HOR), I am overall responsible for securing optimal JYSK store operations in my country (Ireland). Through JYSK values and JYSK leadership, my job is to achieve all budgets and goals and implement all current concepts. I refer to Executive Vice President of Retail.
  • My primary co-operative partners are:
    • Retail Operational Manager
    • Finance Manager
    • Human Resource Manager
    • Logistics Manager
    • Store Concept Manager
    • Development Manager
    • Sales and Marketing Manager
  • Other responsibilities are:
    • Establishing a new store network in JYSK Ireland and developing the stores and their operations.
    • Securing operations – planning, budgeting and following the implementations.
    • Staff management – ensuring that JYSK values and JYSK leadership is followed by the organisation.
    • Organisation and communication – maintaining an open and informative communication flow in the country as well as to and from JYSK Nordic.
    • Securing the constant sales growth with maximised profitability.

What is it like to be HOR in JYSK?

  • I am new in the position as we have just started to run the project in Ireland. At the moment, the best way to describe it is that my job involves constantly varied tasks and projects done together with several great colleagues to build up the organisation for the upcoming grand opening in April 2019.
  • At the same time, my job is strategic as we are constantly searching for great opportunities for opening stores and establishing business but also operational as we are also looking for great talents to join the team in JYSK Ireland.
  • The best part of my job is the variety of tasks. Every day is different because the retail wheel constantly turns on brings new challenges with it. In my opinion that is both the best and most challenging thing in the retail business – something that I have learned to love.

Challenges that you meet in your position?

  • JYSK is a multinational, big and successful company that has built its success on doing things the same way all over the world. The key to be successful is to follow the concepts that has proven to be efficient ways of working within a network of more than 2500 stores.
  • The challenge for a competitive and result-oriented organisation, like JYSK, is patience because eagerness to develop before the basics has been met is a somewhat natural behaviour to us. My job is to find an efficient and clear way to communicate the expectations to the organisation to ensure that we are all on the same track rather than working in different silos.
  • Following JYSK’s concepts does not mean that there is no room for innovation. Quite the contrary because every update in our ways of working comes from real life experiences. I always urge my team to be creative and innovative but only after we have lived up to the expectations given.

Describe the work culture in your country

  • What I would like to see in Ireland is an open atmosphere where we use our right to speak up. Everyone should feel that his or her thoughts and opinions on any matter are always welcome.
  • I would like my team to have the mentality where unnecessary hierarchy is avoided and where everyone takes full ownership of their own responsibilities involving and supporting each other when possible. We should work hard to achieve common goals but have fun together doing so.
  • We are retailers because we want to win and to be winners we need to achieve great results as a team. Our culture in JYSK is competitive and full of energetic people driving the results. Moreover, when records are made we celebrate our success together and set the bar to new record heights.

Why should others choose to work at JYSK?

  • I have worked in JYSK for only two years but from day one, I felt warmly welcomed. My reasons for joining JYSK were many but one of them was the competitive and multinational culture with a possibility for international career steps. To me it happened sooner that I really expected but I am thrilled to have the opportunity. That is one of the things in JYSK that I have learned to appreciate - things will happen. We have an employee promise that says it best: “bring dedications, meet possibilities.”
  • Another thing I have learned to appreciate in JYSK is that while having an energetic and competitive attitude we also pay close attention to training our staff continously to help them achieving common goals.
  • Finally, I have really enjoyed meeting nice and helpful people across the organisation. If you want to work with winners, then JYSK is for sure the right place to apply.
